- 1Step 1
Pat 400 g tofu dry with paper towels and slice into 10x5x1.5 cm pieces.
- 2Step 2
Season the tofu slices evenly with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper.
- 3Step 3
Place 2 tbsp flour, 1 lightly whisked egg, and the mixed 4 tbsp white and 4 tbsp black sesame seeds into three separate shallow bowls.
- 4Step 4
Press each tofu slice into the flour, shaking off any excess.
- 5Step 5
Dip the floured tofu into the egg, letting the excess drip off.
- 6Step 6
Coat the tofu thoroughly in the sesame seeds, pressing firmly so they adhere. Repeat for all slices.
- 7Step 7
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add 2 finely sliced garlic cloves and fry until golden and crisp.
- 8Step 8
Remove the garlic from the pan and drain on paper towels.
- 9Step 9
Increase heat to medium-high. Add the tofu to the skillet and fry for 90 seconds until the sesame crust is nutty and crisp.
- 10Step 10
Carefully flip the tofu and cook the other side for another 90 seconds.
- 11Step 11
Use tongs to sear the edges of the tofu steaks for about 30 seconds per side until crispy.
- 12Step 12
Remove the tofu from the pan and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- 13Step 13
Lower the heat to medium. Add 2 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp mirin, 2 tbsp cooking sake, and 2 tbsp water to the skillet.
- 14Step 14
Simmer the sauce for 1 minute until it reduces to a syrupy consistency, then remove from heat.
- 15Step 15
Serve the tofu steaks topped with the teriyaki sauce, the fried garlic, and 1 sliced green onion.
